‘When will it stop?’ Woman fatally shot in KC roadway in Wednesday’s 2nd homicide
A woman was found fatally shot Wednesday night in a roadway in south Kansas City, police said.
Officers were called to the shooting shortly before 7:45 p.m. in the area of Bennington Avenue and East Red Bridge Road, where they found the woman in the road, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s unclear what led up to the killing. At some point, the woman was driving on the roadway on an ATV, said Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a department spokeswoman.
“This is a person’s family member, sister, wife, girlfriend,” El-Ashkar told reporters as blue and red emergency lights flashed across her face. “And another homicide in Kansas City.”
The killing marked the 98th this year in Kansas City, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes law enforcement shootings. By this time last year, there had been 68 homicides.
This kind of loss of life is “so unnecessary,” El-Ashkar said.
“So devastating to the community, to Kansas City,” she said. “When will it stop?”
El-Ashkar urged anyone with information about the shooting to call the homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
About 30 minutes earlier, police had responded to another homicide when a man was fatally shot about 7:15 p.m. in the area of Chestnut Avenue and East 27th Street.
