Two Women’s March events are happening over weekend in Kansas, but none in KC
Women’s marches are planned in Lawrence on Saturday and Topeka on Sunday, around the anniversary of the Women’s March on Washington last year.
The Lawrence event — Women’s March 2018-Lawrence Still Marching — begins with speakers at 1 p.m. at the South Park Gazebo at 1130 Massachusetts St., followed by a march at 2 p.m. The event’s Facebook page suggests that more than 1,000 may attend.
Organizers say the event is a celebration of “the accomplishments of women in the political sphere” in the last year and “to prepare ourselves for the election year to come.”
In Topeka, organizers are gathering at the south steps plaza of the State Capitol Building located on Southwest 10th Avenue, between Southwest Harrison Street and Southwest Jackson Street. The event, including speakers, is set for 1-3 p.m. Sunday.
Organizers of the Kansas City women’s rally last year did not repeat the event this year, said Kristin Wing, who served on the 2017 event’s steering committee.
“We have been highly recommending that folks go either to Topeka or Lawrence,” Wing said.
Wing said Kansas City organizers turned their attention this year toward getting women elected to office.
“We’ve kind of refocused our energies a little bit,” Wing said. “That doesn’t mean we won’t have one next year because we had a lot of interest from women who want to do it.”
