AECOM, the largest airport design firm in the U.S., announced Tuesday that it has assembled its team of partners to compete to design, build and finance a new terminal at Kansas City International Airport.
The announcement signals that Los Angeles-based AECOM will very likely compete with Kansas City-based Burns & McDonnell and submit its own proposal to modernize KCI. The deadline for those proposals is July 27.
AECOM said it will be the lead designer in its consortium. It was the top airport design firm in the country in 2016, when ranked by revenue, according to Engineering News-Record, a trade magazine for the engineering and construction industries.
The company had $413.8 million in airport design revenues. It has worked on designs for airports in Boston, Baltimore, New York City and other airports around the world and has a Kansas City office.

AECOM will be joined by Fentress Architects, which has a portfolio that includes Denver International Airport, Incheon airport in Seoul, South Korea, and the Los Angeles airport.
The team also will include Oaktree Capital Management, a global investment manager, and AECOM Capital. Contractors on the team will be AECOM Hunt, which has more than 70 aviation projects in its portfolio, and Turner Construction.
Turner has been a contractor on the Bartle Hall expansion, Kansas Speedway, Arrowhead Stadium renovations and Children’s Mercy Park, among other projects.
Burns & McDonnell previously announced members of its team, which is heavy on Kansas City-based firms, including BNIM Architects, Populous, HOK, Wellner Architects and Garcia Architecture. It also includes Dallas-based Corgan as an architecture partner. JE Dunn and McCownGordon are partners, as is Americo Life Inc.
Burns & McDonnell, which the Engineering News-Record ranked as the third largest airport designer in the U.S., initially had sought an exclusive contract to design, build and privately finance a new single terminal at the airport. But after AECOM expressed interest, city government officials changed course. They got public pressure and legal advice that led them to declare it would be fairer and more transparent to open the project to competitive proposals.
Final proposals, including financing details, are due Aug. 10.
The City Council hopes to adopt ballot language in late August and put an airport proposal to voters in a citywide election in November.
