Weekend shootings leave one dead, others wounded in Kansas City

A half dozen shootings in Kansas City this weekend left one person dead and at least three others hospitalized on Saturday.

Police were investigating shootings in parts of the city ranging from Westport to the East Side and from a Northeast neighborhood to East 83rd Terrace.

The violence began on Friday about 6:45 p.m., when police making a traffic stop of a speeding vehicle near 12th Street and Van Brunt Boulevard discovered a passenger who had been shot several times.

That man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Detectives found the place where he had been shot nearby at 14th Street and Belmont Avenue and took a person into custody, according to Darin Snapp, a Kansas City police spokesman.

About 1 a.m. Saturday, police investigating the sound of shots in the 100 block of Brooklyn Avenue found a man dead in an alley. Police identified him as Thomas E. Kuzila Jr., 52. Detectives had no description of the shooter.

Other shootings on Friday night remained under investigation.

A man who arrived with gunshot wounds at Research Medical Center shortly before 9 p.m. Friday was in critical condition Saturday, according to police. Investigators believed he had been shot at a car wash at 4325 Prospect Ave., where officers responding to gunfire saw several vehicles fleeing the scene and found “a large number” of spent shell casings left behind in the parking lot.

Two shootings north of Westport were believed to be connected. Officers found one person shot about 9 p.m. near 39th Terrace and Washington Street and another about 10 minutes later in the 3700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. Both were taken to a hospital and were in serious condition.

Early Saturday, a man found shot in the back about 2:30 a.m. inside a house in the 1300 block of East 83rd Terrace was taken to a hospital but was expected to survive, police said.

Police found shell casings in the front yard and in the street nearby but said witnesses at the scene were “uncooperative.” Detectives had no description of the shooter.
