Person dead in shooting involving Kansas City, Kan., police
One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting across the street from a Kansas City, Kan., elementary school Wednesday evening.
The shooting involving Kansas City, Kan., police occurred about 5 p.m. near the New Chelsea Elementary School at 24th Street and Wood Avenue.
Police have not released details of the events leading up to and including the shooting, except to say the it "remains under thorough investigation."
Kansas City, Kan., Police Chief Terry Zeigler said on Twitter that all of the officers involved in the shooting were okay.
The shooting comes a day after an officer-involved shooting critically injured one person in Johnson County. In that shooting, Lenexa police were trying to stop a stolen vehicle in the parking lot in the 15900 block of W. 87th Street Parkway.
According to Lenexa police:
As officers were ordering the driver out of the vehicle, the driver allegedly fled, striking several occupied Lenexa patrol cars.
An officer fired his handgun, striking the driver. The driver led police on a pursuit that ended near 81st Street and Woodland Avenue.
Officers performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. Lenexa officers were evaluated for minor injuries.
The Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team is investigating that shooting.
