A Raymore man was charged with murder last week in a shooting prompted by a person backing out of a drug deal, according to Kansas City police.

Damyon D. Cook, 19, faces first-degree murder, armed criminal action and resisting arrest charges in the fatal shooting of Virgil Marshall in late March.

Cook shot Marshall, who was 45, in the back multiple times after agreeing to a truce, according to witness accounts and the police investigation detailed in court documents.

The documents also state:

Cook met Marshall and another person near Euclid and 30th streets in order to collect money and sell drugs.

When Marshall backed out of a transaction, Cook began to "antagonize" Marshall. A fight broke out, and Marshall was able to gain control of Cook's handgun.

Marshall tried to remove the gun's magazine but was unable "due to his intoxicated condition."

He then gave the gun back to Cook, and the two men apologized to one another and agreed to stop fighting.

As Marshall walked away, his back to Cook, a witness observed Cook fire at Marshall's back multiple times.

As police arrived on scene, a Jeep was observed fleeing the area. Officers found Marshall on the ground, moaning and saying he'd been shot.

Officer asked if the Jeep was involved in the shooting. Marshall said, "Yes, he shot me."

Marshall later died at a hospital.

Cook's bond was set at $250,000.
