Three days after his mom is killed, teen is accused in slaying
A 15-year-old charged with murder in a drive-by shooting of another teen was the son of a woman killed in a drive-by shooting three days before.
Michael Adams Jr. was charged Wednesday with one count each of first-degree felony murder, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied dwelling, and criminal use of weapons in the death of 15-year-old Brannae’ Brown.
Brown was shot about 6:30 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of Freeman Drive in Kansas City, Kan. The shooting also injured another person, court records indicate.
Adams is the son of Natasha Hays, who was killed Aug. 30 in a drive-by shooting in the 2400 block of North Ninth Street in Kansas City, Kan.
According to court records, the criminal use of a weapon charge against Adams stemmed from contact police had with him while investigating the death of his mother. Adams is alleged to have possessed a handgun when questioned. It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to possess a gun in the state of Kansas.
Adams was charged in the juvenile division of district court. Prosecutors also filed a motion to try the teen as an adult.
Adams is being held in the Wyandotte County Juvenile Detention Center. No court date has been set for the criminal charges nor the motion to have Adams certified as an adult.
