The Chiefs reportedly tried acquiring Seahawks linebacker before trade deadline

Some fans were critical of Chiefs general manager Brett Veach when the team failed to make a deal last week ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline.

Although a deal wasn’t made, it wasn’t from a lack of trying on Veach’s behalf.

When the deadline came and went Tuesday, it was reported that Veach had talked with the Jets about running back Breece Hall, the Wichita native. But the two sides couldn’t agree on compensation, and Hall remained with the Jets.

Veach also reportedly tried to get help for the defense.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Chiefs attempted to acquire Seattle linebacker Boye Mafe.

“A near deal: At Tuesday’s NFL deadline, the Chiefs made a late strong push to acquire Seahawks linebacker Boye Mafe, per sources,” Schefter wrote on X. “Some thought the deal would get done; one source even thought it was completed. But right before the deadline, Seattle opted to hold on to Mafe.”

Mafe, who turns 27 on Nov. 30, had his first sack of the season Sunday in Seattle’s 44-22 win over the Cardinals. He’s played in all nine of the Seahawks’ games this season, making four starts. Mafe has 15 tackles and three quarterback hits.

There was no word on what the Chiefs were willing to send to Seattle in return for Mafe.
