Astros offered to trade star for Eric Hosmer, ex-Royals GM Dayton Moore reveals

Eric Hosmer and other members of the 2015 World Series championship team will be honored Thursday night by the Royals at a swanky gala at Union Station.

And he’ll be part of the celebration of that team Saturday ahead of the Royals’ game against the Cardinals at Kauffman Stadium.

But if former Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow had his way, Hosmer would have other plans this weekend.

Former Royals general manager Dayton Moore was on Hosmer’s Diggin’ Deep podcast this week and revealed that Luhnow proposed a blockbuster trade involving Astros second baseman Jose Altuve.

“When you think about a trade, we were in Houston in ‘13 and I got a call from Jeff Luhnow,” Moore recalled. “I was sitting at the Starbucks coffee, and he said, ‘I got a deal for you.’ I said, ‘OK.’ He said, ‘I’ll trade you Altuve for Eric Hosmer.’ That’s one.”

Hosmer asked: “Is that real?

Moore’s response: “Yeah, it’s real.”

Hosmer laughed and said: “You’re an idiot!”

Moore noted: “I said, ‘Nope. Nope.’ I didn’t like trading major league players.”

Altuve was coming off an All-Star Game appearance in 2013, the first of nine in his career. Altuve later won three batting titles, seven Silver Slugger awards, a Gold Glove award and he was the 2017 AL MVP.

Hosmer won the first of his four Gold Glove awards in 2013, got a Silver Slugger in 2017 and helped the Royals to a pair of World Series appearances.

You can see video of Moore talking about the proposed Hosmer-Altuve trade on YouTube. It would have been a huge deal.
