Mayor throws cold water on fans’ hopes for Trail Blazers move to KC
Sports fans in Missouri and Kansas are free to dream a little dream, and many would love to see the Kansas City Trail Blazers become a reality.
The estate of late Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen put the team up for sale Tuesday, and Kansas City has an NBA-ready arena in T-Mobile Center.
Is this a match made in heaven? Well ... there are multiple obstacles to a potential move to Kansas City. For starters, NBA owners would have to approve any relocation.
Second is the cost. As ESPN noted, the Boston Celtics sold earlier this year for $6.1 billion and Sportico recently valued the Blazers at $3.6 billion.
Could Taylor Swift play a part in helping with that? A few fans floated that idea on social media.
Again, we’re dreaming here about the NBA relocating to Missouri, but many people thought the Kansas City Trail Blazers name works. KC once was a stopping point for people blazing a trail out west.
If you’re unfamiliar with it, the history of Westport is fascinating.
Fans in KC loved the idea of the Trail Blazers coming to T-Mobile Center. And they chimed in across social media.
Alas, that last comment about Mayor Quinton Lucas was about an X message that he later deleted. Lucas made it clear Kansas City is not interested in having the Trail Blazers come to KC.
Lucas wrote: “We’re in the business of keeping teams, not taking them. If the Kings ever wanted to come home or someone called us, sure. But for now, good luck to the people of Portland. I hope it works out.”
