Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce have been out of public eye. That could change Monday
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour lasted just shy of two years, during which time she played 149 concerts on five continents. And in the midst of the tour, she began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and attending his games.
Perhaps it’s no surprise that Swift has taken a step back from the public eye, as she and Kelce enjoy a break from their jobs.
Fans have speculated that Kelce and Swift are now engaged. Or married. Or broken up. Or will soon welcome a baby.
Other than some clandestine photos taken while the couple was in Utah earlier this year, Swift and Kelce haven’t been spotted together since dining with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, in New Orleans before Super Bowl LIX.
Swift’s fans hope that changes Monday at the annual Met Gala in New York City, fashion’s biggest night.
If the couple shows up it would be their red carpet debut for this event. Fans had hoped to see them attend together last year, but Swift was on tour.
Swift is a Met Gala pro. She’s attended the fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute six times. She even co-chaired the event once.
Kelce has never attended, though his Chiefs teammate, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was a guest in 2023. An invitation is considered a “get” for Hollywood stars, models, musicians, athletes and other celebrities.
This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” honors menswear, specifically Black dandyism, and explores the historical and cultural importance of Black style and its influence on fashion.
British race car driver Lewis Hamilton, singer Pharrell Williams, actor Colman Domingo and rapper A$AP Rocky are co-chairs with Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
Basketball star LeBron James will make his Met Gala debut as an honorary chair this year.
KCK native and Grammy-nominated Janelle Monáe, who has become a reliable showstopper, is a member of this year’s planning committee. That committee also includes several athletes — Simone Biles, Angel Reese, and Sha’Carri Richardson among them.
Travis Kelce’s style
Kelce may not have made an appearance at the Met yet, but he’s been featured in Vanity Fair, GQ and Vogue.
He has made no secret about his love of fashion. Before each Chiefs game, the players show their love of clothes, and Kelce is often the best-dressed of the group.
Or at least the most noteworthy (good or bad).
“Fashion became a significant part of my life pretty organically,” Kelce previously told The Star. “Growing up, I always appreciated self-expression, and fashion is one of those outlets for me.
“Over time, as I got into the NFL, it became a way to show a bit of who I am off the field. I have a love for creativity, the artistry of design and having fun with style.”
Taylor Swift’s Met Gala style
Swift’s appearances on this red carpet have reflected her personal-style evolution since her teen years. She last attended in 2016.
In 2008, for the theme of “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy,” she wore a slinky, goddess-like, golden Badgley Mischka gown with a shimmery mermaid-like pattern, her long blonde hair curled loosely. Her lipstick was nude-colored.
Two years later in 2010, fans recognized her “Speak Now” era when she showed up in a sophisticated white Ralph Lauren gown with a faux bob, her signature red lip color and dramatic cat eyeliner for the theme of “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity.”
The following year she wore an intricate black-and-gold J. Mendel gown with a train (that kept tripping her up), perfect for the theme of “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.” Fashion experts called it jaw-dropping.
In 2013 she wore J. Mendel again for “Punk: Chaos to Couture” night. There was nothing girl-next-door about the cutouts on a black gown with a dramatic bejeweled collar, smoky eyes and crimped hair.
In what Teen Vogue declared her “most famous and beloved Met Gala look of them all so far,” Swift in 2014 wore a blush-pink Oscar de la Renta gown for the “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” gala. The look was classic old Hollywood.
In 2016, for the tech-inspired “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” theme, she wore an edgy, custom, silver and black Louis Vuitton mini dress with platinum-dyed hair and plum lipstick.
The theme “gave the singer the chance to show off a look that pushed the boundaries of her style as we knew it,” noted Vogue.
Just like the Oscars red carpet, the Met Gala’s fashion parade invites high-level style scrutiny.
In 2023, when Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, made their debut, they scored high points.
The theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” honoring the longtime creative director for French fashion house Chanel. Many guests wore black and white, the famous Chanel color palette inspired ages ago by the uniform of Catholic nuns.
The Mahomeses followed suit — Patrick in a black Hugo Boss tuxedo, Brittany in a white, form-fitting gown.
Vogue will livestream the red carpet arrivals beginning at 5 p.m. Central Time on Monday on its website, social media platforms and YouTube channel.
Swift tends to pull up onto red carpets toward the end, so keep an eye out after 6:30 p.m.
