Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes on changing hairstyle and why he’s happy with the look

We are used to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes making headlines for what he does on the football field.

That’s to be expected when you’re a two-time MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP.

But less than two weeks after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, Mahomes turned heads with what had happened to his head.

Mahomes cut his Mohawk, which has been a hairstyle many young men have copied since he became a star.

DeJuan Bonds, who is Mahomes’ barber, told Fox News about cutting the star quarterback’s hair.

“I just think with the end of the season, frustration maybe, like, ‘You know what, I’m done. It’s time for a new look, change,’ and I think that’s pretty much what prompted his sudden urge,” Bonds said. “It probably was a little bit (frustration), then there was like, ‘Hey you know, it’s time for a new look.’”

Bonds, whose barber shop is in Overland Park, had told Fox that Mahomes wanted his hair cut even shorter.

“It could have been very low, but I know better than that. I know better than to follow anybody’s directions when they ‘just cut it off’ unless I ask them multiple times, and they say yes, and they want it all the way off, and I know he didn’t want that,” Bonds told Fox.

Mahomes happy with hairstyle

During a call with reporters, Mahomes was asked Wednesday about why he made the change to his hairstyle.

Mahomes made it clear he didn’t make a snap decision about his hair.

“I’ve wanted to do it for a while, but it was kind of one of those superstitions,” Mahomes said. “You kept winning the Super Bowl, which is a good thing, but I don’t want to cut the hair while I was doing it. And so I told everybody during the season that win or lose, if we win three in a row, or if we lose, I’m getting the hair cut. Like, that’s enough, and I’m very excited.

“I’ve looked at some videos from last year, and I can’t believe all you guys let me keep that nappy hair for so long. I look way better now with the short hair. So I’ll be keeping this going.”
