Here are the latest rumors and musings about the Chiefs ahead of NFL Draft
Don’t be shocked if you hear Joe Montana’s name mentioned Thursday at the start of the NFL Draft.
As ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted Sunday, there have been no trades for first-round picks and we’re two days away from the start of the draft. That’s not happened since at least 1967. The Chiefs traded for Montana in 1993 only five days before the draft and that had been the closest to the start of the draft before a first-round pick was traded.
The Chiefs have eight picks in the NFL Draft, which is Thursday through Saturday in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Here is what football pundits are saying about the Chiefs and some rumors and musings (the latest chatter is on top).
A running back?
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said the Chiefs had spoken with Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson on Tuesday.
Projected trade
Pro Football Focus sees the Chiefs as moving out of the first round of the draft after a deal with the Patriots.
Chiefs take an Edge?
ESPN’s Peter Schrager did a mock draft and it has the Chiefs selecting Tennessee Edge James Pearce Jr.
“Pearce has double-digit sack potential and a ton of upside, though most have him sliding to the second round,” Schrager wrote.
Potential trade
ESPN’s Matt Miller reported the Chiefs are actively looking to trade up in the first round.
“A move up in Round 1 would likely be for a long-term offensive tackle solution; I heard the goal would be to move in front of the Houston Texans (No. 25) and Los Angeles Rams (No. 26) if the Chiefs like a specific left tackle still on the board,” Miller wrote.
The Chiefs have the 31st overall pick in the first round.
Projected trade II
Chad Reuter of NFL.com has the Chiefs trading up to No. 27 after a deal with the Baltimore Ravens. Reuter has the Chiefs then drafting Minnesota offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery, the former Ruskin High School player.
“Philadelphia’s domination of the line of scrimmage in the Super Bowl leads the Chiefs to find another tackle early in the draft, even after signing Jaylon Moore to a major free-agent deal,” Reuter wrote. “They send a third-round selection to Baltimore to bring in the big-bodied but agile Ersery — regaining some value by swapping second-round picks with the Ravens.”
More on Ersery
Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz said Ersery has met with the Chiefs ahead of the draft.
Will Chiefs be aggressive?
Here is what Schultz said about the Chiefs and what positions they might target while on “The Herd With Colin Cowherd.”
Help in the top 100?
The Chiefs have four picks among the top 100 and might find value after the first round. They have two picks in the third round.
Here is what ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote in a segment titled “questions loom over this draft class:”
“There isn’t an elite offensive tackle in this draft. No cornerback is, in the eyes of evaluators, a can’t-miss prospect. There seem to be more questions in this draft than answers. Multiple teams consider the value to be not in Round 1, but in Rounds 2 and 3 and maybe bleeding into Round 4.”
Projected trade III
The Athletic’s Nate Taylor wrote this in his mock draft: “The Chiefs trade their first-round pick (No. 31), their original third-round pick (No. 95) and their original 2026 fourth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings for No. 24, a fourth-round pick (No. 139) and a 2026 fourth-round pick.”
