The biggest story leading up to Saturday’s game against the Houston Texans at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium was the status of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes injured an ankle late in the Chiefs’ 21-7 win over the Browns last Sunday. He left that game and did not return.

But Mahomes was a full participant at most practices this week and he started Saturday’s game against Houston.

Fans got an early answer as to the status of that ankle on the Chiefs’ first drive against the Texans. Mahomes scrambled for a 12-yard gain.

A few plays later, Mahomes dropped back to pass, then stepped up in the pocket. As he began to take off running, he was nearly tripped before sprinting ahead to the end zone. It was a bruising finish to the run, which resulted in a 15-yard touchdown.

“What bum ankle?” NBC Sports’ Noah Eagle observed.

Here is the play, which ESPN’s Field Yates said was the longest scoring run in the regular season of Mahomes’ career.
