Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes leaves game following a hard hit against the Browns

A failed fourth-down attempt is bad enough, but Chiefs fans held their breath when quarterback Patrick Mahomes took a vicious hit during Sunday’s game in Cleveland.

The Chiefs faced a fourth-and-3 play midway through the fourth quarter but Mahomes’ pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster fell incomplete.

Mahomes got up and limped to the sideline. Here is the play.

CBS Sports’ Evan Washburn noted that Mahomes had both ankles taped on the sideline, but it was the right ankle that was bothering Mahomes.

After the Chiefs forced another punt, backup quarterback Carson Wentz entered the game in place of Mahomes.

Washburn noted that Mahomes was questionable to return, and it’s possible the Chiefs were thinking ahead. They held a 21-7 lead when Mahomes was injured, and they’ve got two more games in the next 10 days.

Here is what Washburn said during the broadcast.

David J. Chao, who comments on NFL injuries, shared this about Mahomes in an X post: ”Taping both ankles and available to return. Avoids significant re-injuring previous right kneecap dislocation or right high ankle.”

Postgame update on Mahomes

CBS Sports shared this video of Mahomes leaving the field following the game, which the Chiefs won 21-7, and he was moving slowly.

When he got to the tunnel at Huntington Bank Field, Mahomes rode on a cart, likely to get more tests done on that ankle.
