The first quarter of Sunday’s Chiefs-Panthers game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte went by in a flash.

Then came the penalty flags.

Both teams were hit with penalties at inopportune times. While the narrative among many NFL fans is that the Chiefs are in the pocket of game officials, they got called for one that incensed KC supporters.

Carolina tried a two-point conversion in the third quarter, but Bryce Young’s pass to Adam Thielen was incomplete after a huge hit by Chiefs safety Justin Reid.

However, Reid was called for unnecessary roughness on this play.

Although CBS Sports rules expert Gene Steratore, a former NFL referee, said the officials got it right, it was clear that Thielen wasn’t hit in the head.

Former Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling wrote on X: “What is Justin Reid supposed to do right there? That’s a hard spot to be in as a defender.”

Chiefs fans were in agreement with Valdes-Scantling, who helped the team win a pair of its recent Super Bowl titles. Carolina ended up getting a free point because of a kicked extra point following a flag on Carolina.

Here is a bit of what was being said about the penalty on Reid.
