Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes jokes he’s ‘playing defense’ now that his daughter can walk

A little over year ago, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was in a walking boot following surgery on his left foot.

While not a great situation for Mahomes, it did allow him to spend all the time he wanted with his daughter, Sterling, who was born in February 2021.

Fast forward to Thursday, and Mahomes is enjoying life with unlimited mobility. And so is Sterling.

“The no surgery and being able to train right out the gate was huge for me.,” Mahomes said Thursday at a news conference. ”I feel like I’m in a way better spot physically, I feel like my golf game’s in a better spot, I can play more. But no, it’s been cool to hang out with all these guys in Texas. “

Not being in the boot allowed Mahomes to work out in Texas last month with the Chiefs’ pass catchers, some of whom signed with Kansas City after the season.

Thing is, Sterling is walking now which has meant Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, have had to keep an eye on their daughter, who apparently is getting around the house.

“Obviously being older, she has a personality now. She can walk,” Mahomes said. “I feel like she started walking and all of a sudden her mom and I had to play defense because she’s everywhere.

“She’s just freaking everywhere.”

Ah, yes, many parents have been excited to see a child take her or his first steps, only to realize the kid now can get into a lot of things around the house.
