Chiefs’ Juan Thornhill seemed baffled by the state-line debate among Kansas City fans
Fox Sports’ Nick Wright said he would quit being a Chiefs fan if they moved to the state of Kansas.
Following a report last month that the Chiefs were exploring options for a new stadium in Kansas, 57% of Chiefs fans said in an unscientific poll that the team shouldn’t leave Missouri.
On Twitter, the report of a possible future Chiefs move generated a lot of talk, and fans continue to comment in large numbers on stories about any tug-of-war between Missouri and Kansas.
That poll, which was done by The Star, showed 12% of fans said it doesn’t matter where the Chiefs play as long as they’re winning.
The debate among Kansas City fans about the merits of one state over the other seemed to baffle Chiefs safety Juan Thornhill. In his opinion, people will come if a stadium is built in Kansas or if the Chiefs stay at Arrowhead Stadium.
“Y’all argue about this Kansas side and Missouri Side stuff but all of y’all end up in the same stadium on sundays i don’t get it,” Thornhill wrote in a Twitter message last week.
A fan responded by asking Thornhill if fans of Virginia and Virginia Tech get along. Thornhill who played at Virginia, wrote that was not an apt comparison to make. That was likely because the colleges are in the same state.
“I get the college rivalry but that’s not what this is,” Thornhill wrote on Twitter.
Another fan said it was like Virginia/Virginia Tech ... if there was a state line dividing the universities and the two states were on opposite sides of a war.
Thornhill wasn’t buying that argument.
“I get the college rivalry but the state rivalry is different,” Thornhill wrote. “That’s like me hating West Virginia.”
Thornhill is not the first athlete to be surprised by the state-line squawking, and he likely won’t be the last.
