Should Kansas City Chiefs stay in Missouri or move to Kansas? Vote in Border War poll
The night the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl in 2020, then-president Donald Trump congratulated the team for representing “the Great State of Kansas” well.
Inquiring minds want to know: What did he know and when did he know it?
Kansas City Chiefs fans learned Tuesday that it’s possible the team could someday move to the other side of the state line, to the “Great State of Kansas,” aka the Sunflower State, aka home of Dorothy and friends.
One possibility mentioned: Moving to The Legends area in Kansas City, Kansas, home of the Kansas Speedway and Children’s Mercy Park, where Sporting Kansas City plays.
Chiefs president Mark Donovan said Tuesday the team likes Arrowhead and Lamar Hunt’s legacy, on the Missouri side. But developers on the Kansas side have pitched the team new locations.
The news rang through Chiefs Kingdom like the opening shot of a new border war.
Tuesday became a caps-lock day, with more than a few fans weighing in online like this: “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.”
Reaction swung wildly between “that’s stupid” to “do it.”

The fallout is a reminder that, in some quarters of our fair metro, there is no love lost between the two states.
All meant in jest. Right?
“Chiefs would lose so many fans if this happened Kansas and Missouri people don’t get along. It is in our DNA,” one longtime fan tweeted.
The discussion also pointed out that some folks need to brush up on local geography.
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KANSAS CITY CHIEFS! NOT KANSAS CHIEFS,” wrote one fan on The Star’s Facebook page.
“it would still be Kansas city chiefs,” another fan noted.
It’s true. The Legends is in Kansas City — Kansas. That’s Wyandotte County, just FYI.
But just-over-the-border is seriously out of the question for some passionate fans.
“They’ll move away from the Chiefs & become the Leawood Leopards? Mission Hills Monsters? Olathe Octopus?”
Or, the Overland Park Chiefs?
The Truman Sports Complex east of downtown Kansas City has been home to the Chiefs since 1972. The team’s lease is said to expire in 2031.
Enough time for Missourians to learn how to drive the other way down Interstate 70.
