CBS gives Kevin Harlan a small promotion, pairs him with a different former Chiefs QB
Kevin Harlan called just a single Chiefs game from the 2019 season, but it was one fans can instantly recall.
In the regular-season finale, the Chiefs knocked off the Chargers while Miami upset the Patriots in Foxborough, giving Kansas City the No. 2 seed and a bye in the playoffs. Harlan was calling the Chiefs game at Arrowhead Stadium but realizing the importance of a Dolphins victory, called both games at the same time at one point.
Former Chiefs quarterback Rich Gannon was the analyst for that Chiefs game and he said at one point: “I’m getting confused, what came are you calling?”
In a magical Chiefs season, it was a special moment
As it so happens, that was the last time Gannon and Harlan will work together. The New York Post reported Gannon won’t be back as the analyst for Harlan’s games. In his place will be another former Chiefs’ quarterback: Trent Green.
Harlan, who is a KU graduate, is getting a bit of a promotion. He and Gannon had been CBS Sports’ No. 4 broadcast team, while Greg Gumbel and Green were No. 3. Harlan moves up while Gumbel will slide to the No. 4 team with Gannon.
The Post story notes Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will remain the top broadcast duo for CBS Sports. The No. 2 team will be Ian Eagle with Charles Davis, who was hired from Fox and replaces Dan Fouts. He was let go by CBS earlier this year.
Green passed for 21,459 yards and 118 touchdowns in six seasons with the Chiefs ending in 2006. He joined CBS in 2014.
