Chiefs’ Tyrann Mathieu paying for funeral of child killed in New Orleans shooting

Chiefs defensive back Tyrann Mathieu has had a busy offseason, and a big part of that time has been helping others.

Mathieu’s foundation in March donated 30,000 meals to Kansas City families affected by the coronavirus.

He also paid a month’s rent to families in New Orleans that were struggling financially during the pandemic.

Now, Mathieu reportedly will cover the funeral costs for 9-year-old Devante Bryant, who was killed Monday in New Orleans.

“Young black children should not be dying from gun violence,” Mathieu told TMZ Sports. “Devante didn’t even have a chance to live his life before it was tragically taken away from him.

“My goal is to help stop the violence and help my community to show and empower children from my community that there is another way, one child at a time.”

Mathieu was born in New Orleans and later played for the LSU football team before being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals.

“I wanted to help the Bryant family because I am from the 7th Ward and I felt that pain,” Mathieu told TMZ. “I have a 7-year-old son that lives in New Orleans and I couldn’t imagine something happening to him at that age. He is only 2 years younger than Devante.”

NOLA.com reported Bryant died in a triple shooting. Two other children were wounded in the shooting and police don’t have a suspect.
