Chiefs’ Tyrann Mathieu plays off Landlord nickname by helping families in special way

Chiefs defensive back Tyrann Mathieu’s nickname has changed during his time in Kansas City.

When the Chiefs signed Mathieu a year ago, fans here knew him as the Honey Badger, a moniker he received during his college days at LSU.

But as the Chiefs defense became a force in the second half of last season, Mathieu earned a new nickname.

The Landlord.

As he continues to make an impact to those in need, Mathieu is playing off that name for a special series with Bleacher Report.

In March, the Tyrann Mathieu Foundation donated 30,000 meals to Kansas City families affected by the the coronavirus. Starting Tuesday, Bleacher Report will show the good things Mathieu is doing in his hometown of New Orleans.

The Tyrann Mathieu Foundation said in a news release that a four-part Bleacher Report series will “capture Mathieu surprising four families with a quick zoom call to encourage, uplift, show support and mindfulness of how devastatingly COVID-19 impacted each family. Before the Zoom call ends, Mathieu drops a bombshell the families never expected. Tyrann explains how he plans to lighten their financial burden by covering one month’s rent for each family.”

Zelle, the mobile payment company, will pay for a second month of rent for each family, the release says.

The first episode was released Tuesday:
