Sammy Watkins let Stephen A. Smith know he’s wrong to dismiss talk of a Chiefs dynasty

At a news conference Tuesday, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said of this teammates: “They want to be a part of trying to build a dynasty because those aren’t easy things to do”

Those words echoed what Mahomes shared in a video Monday after his $503 million, 10-year contract extension was announced with this message: “We’re chasing a dynasty.”

Can the Chiefs, who are the defending Super Bowl LIV champions, be the next dynasty in the NFL?

Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins thinks so. But ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith isn’t so sure.

Those two talked about a potential Chiefs dynasty on Tuesday’s “Get Up” on ESPN.

This may come as a shock, but Smith was worked up about the topic and questioned whether the Chiefs’ defense could hold up its end of the bargain when talking about a dynasty.

“Let me ask you all a question: if the defense didn’t find a way to stop -- and last time I checked in football, you don’t score and automatically keep the ball, right? Don’t you have to give the ball back to the opposing offense and the defense has to stop it?” Smith said.

“Patrick Mahomes don’t play defense. So I know Patrick Mahomes is great. I know that offense is all-world. Sammy, you and T. Hill and my brother Travis Kelce, my lord, I got that. But you don’t play defense ... can we calm down? Can we calm down?”

Watkins, who helped the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIV in February, wasn’t buying it.

“We’re not talking about our defense. Our defense has been great,” Watkins said. “When we talk about offense that’s been the best in the league for last freakin’ three or four years. You’re talking about a guy that’s been playing at the highest level and doing just about every insanely thing a quarterback can do: run, throwing --.”

Smith tried to interject, but Watkins added: “We’re talking about Patrick Mahomes.

Smith said: “He’s the man.”

“And he’s gonna be the man for the next 10 to 15 years, that’s what we’re debating. We’re going to have a dynasty,” Watkins said. “If the Kansas City Chiefs can keep all the players together, we’re going to be a dynasty.”

Smith’s retort: “But I bet the defense won’t be!”

Watkins dismissed that argument.

“We need a top 10 defense, we don’t need an outstanding defense, we need a top 10 defense that’s gonna make plays and go out there and compete,” Watkins said. “But when you got Patrick Mahomes and the things around and the ability that he has around him, he’s going to be great.”

Perhaps the best part of this video is the prolonged sigh from Marcus Spears when Smith began his rant (the worst part is all the yelling):
