Patrick Mahomes shared a great story about Andy Reid’s ability to dissect a defense
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes visited HBO’s “The Shop: Uninterrupted” on Saturday and answered football-related questions from a panel of celebrities.
You may recall that HBO put out a clip from the show on Friday in which Mahomes revealed he couldn’t read defenses in the first half of 2018 season, his first full year as a starter.
That’s changed, of course. But Mahomes said on the show he aspires to reach the level of coach Andy Reid, particularly when it comes to calling plays.
Mahomes recalled a moment in the Chiefs’ 23-3 win over the Broncos in December at Arrowhead Stadium, and how amazed he was that Reid knew Denver’s defense had changed.
Reid’s break down of the Broncos defense led to a touchdown. That’s why Mahomes says he’s not ready to start calling his own plays.
“Here’s an example, we played the Denver Broncos in the snow,” Mahomes said. “We had kind of moved the ball well in the red zone and they had played zone coverage every single time. Every single play. And so I wanted to call a different play, and Coach Reid called a man-beater. He was like, ‘Ah, I want to call this man-beater right now.’ I’m looking at Coach and I was like, ‘What are we doing?’
“We got out there, and those dudes were playing man coverage. It’s touchdown. He knew it. I want to be able to be on that level.”
Here is the clip from Troy Renck of Denver7:
