Patrick Mahomes reveals he couldn’t read defenses through first half of 2018 season

With Super Bowl MVP and NFL MVP awards under his belt in only two seasons as a starter, Chiefs fans may think they’ve seen the best from quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

However, Mahomes believes he has room to get much, much better.

Mahomes explained how while on HBO’s “The Shop: Uninterrupted,” which airs Saturday night. HBO shared a clip of Mahomes talking of how he can improve.

“I didn’t understand how to read defenses until like halfway through last year,” Mahomes said. “I understood coverages, but how to be able to pick up little tendencies defenses do, stuff that (Patriots quarterback Tom) Brady and them have done, that they know it and just do it, I was just playing.

“Then this year, I could actually recognize more and more stuff. And I think the more experience and the more I learn, then I’ll be able to go out there and call plays and do that different stuff, because I’ve seen it. And I still think there’s a long way for me to go there. That’s where mentally, I think I can get better. Physically, I think I’ve done a lot of stuff. I always work on the fundamentals and doing that stuff.

“But I still think mentally I can take my game to a whole other level.”

Here is the clip:

Keep in mind, Mahomes threw for 2,526 yards with 26 touchdowns and six interceptions in the first half of the 2018 season. That includes 13 touchdowns in the Chiefs’ first three games.
