Chiefs’ Matt Nagy on what Hollywood Brown must focus on upon return from injury

There are periods of training camp when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will spend much of his time on one part of his game.

That could include arm angles or deep throws, but on Tuesday, Mahomes worked in a little bit of a lot of things — and was efficient in all areas.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy was impressed with what he saw on the practice fields at Missouri Western. That was especially true about the timing throws.

“I really felt like today was, as a group and in particular with Pat, one of our better days with those type of throws,” Nagy said. “Some downfield stuff (with) the timing element, it wasn’t one of those deals where you’re scrambling, throwing the ball away and catching a ball off-timing. These were all on-timing throws, and then guys were making great catches. So I was really pleased with that.”

One member of the receiving corps missed Tuesday’s practice. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has been sidelined because of an ankle injury he suffered a week earlier.

He’s one of four players who didn’t practice Tuesday. The others were linebacker Drue Tranquill (back), tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring) and cornerback Kristian Fulton (knee; on Physically Unable to Perform list).

Brown played in just two regular-season games a year ago after suffering an injury in the Chiefs’ first preseason game. Nagy emphasized that Brown is working hard to return to the field.

But Nagy added that Brown is missing out on an opportunity to fine tune his timing with Mahomes.

“Well, it’s got to happen quickly when he gets back,” Nagy said. “I know Hollywood wants to be out here, and he’s not, so you are missing out on that timing. And so I know he’s frustrated from last year, when he came in at the end of the year, helped us out. When he gets back, whenever that is, they gotta go full speed and get that down.

“And I know he’s doing everything he can to get back on track, but that timing, man, is so critical, and Hollywood knows that. So what he’s got to do right now is to get back on that field.”
