This pregame headliner played at Super Bowl IV when the Chiefs won ... and is back again
As NFL fans prepare to watch Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night, there’s a sense of deja vu.
Not only are the Kansas City Chiefs playing in the Super Bowl again (for a third straight year, actually), but KC is playing the Philadelphia Eagles again, after facing them in Super Bowl LVII.
The familiar feelings don’t stop there: The Chiefs are playing a Super Bowl in New Orleans for the first time since January 1970, when Kansas City defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV.
The pregame headliner that year? The Southern University Human Jukebox marching band. The pregame headliner this year? If you guessed Southern University Human Jukebox, you’d be correct.
According to their website, the band was named the Human Jukebox because they’d “play the current ‘top 40’s.’” The group is known as an “iconic HBCU band”
“An opportunity to witness the Southern University Marching Band is an opportunity to witness music in motion. This band has raised the bar and set precedents for other collegiate marching bands and ensembles,” the band’s website reads. “... The band prides itself on the unique ability to execute precision drills better than any other marching ensemble in the country.
The band has performed at many historic events, including six Super Bowls and four Sugar Bowls. It has made three presidential inaugural performances and appeared at the Rose Bowl Parade and the Special Olympics.
We’ll see if the Chiefs have a repeat of Super Bowl IV’s result with the Southern University Human Jukebox present.
