Texas Tech coach: Patrick Mahomes ‘all in’ during preparation for Super Bowl LIX
Texas Tech head football coach Joey McGuire isn’t too worried about Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes during Super Bowl LIX on Sunday.
McGuire has seen this movie before. Coaching in the state of Texas, he surely was aware of “Mahomes Magic” during the Chiefs star’s high school and collegiate days. And he has witnessed Mahomes elevate on the biggest stage countless times since he was drafted in 2017.
In an interview with The Star this week, McGuire — hired at Tech in 2021 — said he feels Mahomes has reached another level — one where the synergy between family and football has created a calming atmosphere in his life.
“It’s pretty awesome to talk about how he has grown and the way he put it as being ‘all in,’” McGuire told The Star. “You know, everything that he does is about family and football. The way he takes care of his body, the way he trains, the way he studies, he is getting ready for the moments.”
The Chiefs have a huge moment on the horizon. On Sunday, KC will play the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX for a chance at a third consecutive title. There has not been an NFL team in the Super Bowl era to reach the milestone.
Mahomes and the Chiefs landed in New Orleans on Sunday in preparation for the game. The Chiefs went 15-2 in the regular season and defeated the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills to reach Super Bowl LIX.
Now, the Eagles present another difficult challenge. Philadelphia is led by NFL MVP candidate Saquon Barkley and Pro Bowl quarterback Jalen Hurts. Defensively, the Eagles have a rugged front seven with multiple playmakers.
Mahomes has conquered the Eagles before. Still, McGuire believes the Super Bowl rematch will be close throughout.
“(The Chiefs) are going to have to try and stop the run,” McGuire said. “I know they are going to throw the ball and they’ve got two good receivers. But Philly is going to line up and try to run it down their throats. So the run blitzes and making good tackles on, you know, the best running back this year in the pros (Barkley) is going to be key.”
McGuire offered his score prediction as well. He has the Chiefs pulling out a 27-24 victory when the dust settles.
“I think the Chiefs win,” McGuire said, “and it is going to be a great game.”
