Whenever you schedule a social media post, you’re taking a risk. But this Q&A with Patrick Mahomes must’ve seemed fairly innocuous whenever the Kansas City Chiefs’ social media staff prepared it to come out Sunday around 9 a.m.

The Chiefs quarterback shared what he’s currently watching on TV (“Yellowstone”), his favorite video game (Call of Duty), ice cream flavor (cookies and cream) and more.

Oh, and his favorite NBA player: “Currently, Luka Doncic,” said Mahomes, who is a Dallas Mavericks fan.

The two even celebrated together after a Mavericks game in 2021.

About that.

News broke from ESPN late, late Saturday night that Doncic, who just took the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, was being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that included Anthony Davis. It’s the first time (per ESPN research) two reigning All-NBA players have been traded for each other midseason.

It was one of the biggest blockbuster moves in NBA history, and both Mahomes and defensive lineman Chris Jones reacted on X/Twitter.

“Wait what?” Mahomes tweeted at 11:27 p.m. Saturday, following up minutes later: “I’m sick rn....”

“This trade is crazy,” added Jones just before midnight. He posted a couple of shocked face emojis to highlight his point.

Many were asleep when news of that trade broke, and thus it was understandable that the Chiefs’ scheduled post went out the next morning with the caption: “Always something new to learn about (Mahomes).”

Well, the quarterback saw the video.

“Yall gotta chill....” Mahomes tweeted in response.

The Chiefs’ answer on Twitter: “Never scheduling a post again.”

If there is one silver lining, Mahomes was able to find a positive spin early Sunday morning (before that tweet from the Chiefs went out).

“Kyrie (Irving) and AD,” Mahomes said on Sunday, “going to be nice tho!”
