Lucky or good? Or both? Choose your own adventure with these Kansas City Chiefs, who seemingly find new ways to win on a quirky sequence each and every week.

On the good side of the equation: This is what Patrick Mahomes does. He wins close games, and few are better on key downs and in gotta-have-it situations.

On the lucky side? Well, the Chiefs have had periods where it felt like the universe was against them. But they’ve had some crazy breaks, too. (Remember these games?)

Nevertheless, we’ll see if the Chiefs can break their trend of close games as they face the Cleveland Browns on the road.

Today’s game will be broadcast at 12 p.m. Central on CBS, KCTV5 in Kansas City. In Wichita, the game will be on Channel 12. You can listen on radio via KFNZ (96.5 FM) and WDAF (106.5 FM) in the KC area and KNSS (98.7 FM) around Wichita.

Three storylines for Chiefs-Browns

Welcome back Harrison Butker. Not so much DJ Humphries

The Chiefs got some good news on Saturday, as our Blair Kerkhoff reported that kicker Harrison Butker will be back after missing four games due to injury.

That means no more replacement kickers — though Spencer Shrader and Matthew Wright each booted a game-winner. But news was not as good for DJ Humphries, who has been ruled out.

Wanya Morris, come on down?

Speaking of ... will the Chiefs go back to Wanya Morris? He actually had some good moments last week (beat writer Jesse Newell pointed that out on our latest Chiefs podcast) when filling in for Humphries.

There’s also the break-glass-in-case-of-emergency option, which KC was forced to turn to after a Patrick Mahomes outburst earlier this season.

Protecting Patrick Mahomes

We’ll stick with the offense, though that’s not to minimize the issues the KC secondary has been having of late. But Jameis Winston tends to toss one or two to the other team, so this could be a good game for the KC defense.

The question here is about keeping Mahomes upright. Regardless of the left tackle, the Chiefs’ O-line must do a (much) better job of keeping Mahomes’ jersey clean. That’s important for both sustaining drives and keeping the superstar quarterback from taking more hits than necessary.

More Kansas City Chiefs coverage

  • Wide receiver Hollywood Brown won’t play on Sunday, but could he be nearing his return? Here’s the latest.
  • Let’s stick on the wide receivers, as Xavier Worthy continues to draw praise from his coaches during a productive rookie season. He’s doing the little things already.
  • Closing it out: How about a game prediction? If you’ve been paying attention, you know the Chiefs haven’t covered in a while. Because of that, the betting line is a little funky this week.
