Three storylines for Chiefs-Raiders
A little extra motivation?
You’d think Patrick Mahomes has no shortage of motivation, between the Kermit the Frog video that circulated preseason and his ever enticing back-and-forth with Maxx Crosby. But this matchup has even deeper meaning.
The Raiders delivered the Chiefs a late wake-up call last season, which put them on the path to the Super Bowl. Kansas City hasn’t forgotten and would love to pay the Raiders back this time around.
Game 1 for DeAndre Hopkins
Coach Andy Reid has indicated that the Chiefs’ newest weapon will take the field on Sunday. But DeAndre Hopkins isn’t exactly a typical Chiefs signing.
As explained by columnist Sam McDowell, Hopkins’ strengths and how the Chiefs use their receivers don’t necessarily align, but that introduces some fascinating possibilities for the KC offense. The first look comes Sunday.
It’s still a rivalry
The Raiders have been down for some time, but this is still an NFL rivalry with plenty of disdain and vitriol. In fact, former KC quarterback Trent Green recently shared a personal story from one of the Chiefs’ most compelling wins over the Raiders in the 2000s.
Green, by the way, will be on the call Sunday. (Here’s the full NFL broadcast map.)
