Chiefs vs. Chargers replay: Kansas City pulls out last-minute win over LA, 30-27

On Sunday night, the Los Angeles Chargers are looking for their first home victory against the Chiefs since leaving San Diego in 2017.

Coming into the Sunday Night Football contest, the Chiefs have won eight straight overall at the Chargers’ home field. The last two games went to overtime.

The Chiefs (7-2) are 66-58-1 in the all-time series, including the postseason, winning 14 of the last 17 matchups against the Chargers (5-4). But the Chiefs have faced stiffer competition from the Chargers recently, as the two teams have split their annual two-game series in three of the last four seasons.

The Chiefs should be highly motivated tonight because a win opens a three-game lead in the AFC West.

Final score: Chiefs 30, Chargers 27

To open the final period, Travis Kelce got a touchdown to take the lead for the Chiefs.

A fumble by Josh Allen gave the Chiefs another chance for a drive, but KC’s Jerick McKinnon turned it over himself after a few plays.

The Chargers made a drive with some big catches by Kennan Allen to score a touchdown and get the extra point.

Another drive and run by Travis Kelce earned the Chiefs the lead back with 30 seconds to go.

Third quarter

Neither team managed to change the score in the first part of the third quarter. With 7 minutes remaining, the Chiefs got a field goal to bring it to a four-point game.

The Chiefs attempted a drive late in the quarter featuring catches from Skyy Moore, Justin Watson and Noah Gray, but were unable to turn it into a score.

Halftime: Chargers 20, Chiefs 13

The Chiefs opened the second quarter with some stronger plays, including a 37-yard run by Travis Kelce and a big throw to Jody Fortson. Kelce gets the Chiefs’ first touchdown of the game.

The Chargers countered later in the quarter, with a touchdown and PAT of their own.

The Chiefs were unable to make much of a run after a poor kick and quickly turned the ball over to the Chargers. The Chargers turned it into a drive and scored a field goal.

Kadarius Toney, Juan Thornhill out with injuries

Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney will not return to the game after sustaining a hamstring injury, the Chiefs say. It adds to the Chiefs’ existing issues with receiver injuries.

Safety Juan Thornhill will not come back either.

First quarter

The Chargers won the coin toss to open the game and deferred to the second half, giving the Chiefs the ball first. Kansas City quickly managed to get in a 28-yard run from Isiah Pacheco and a field goal from Harrison Butker to earn the first points.

On the next possession, the Chargers only took three plays to score a touchdown off a 50-yard throw from Justin Herbert to Justin Palmer.

For their next drive, the Chiefs again turned to kicker Harrison Butker for the score, a 53-yard field goal.

The Chargers countered with their own field goal with 2 minutes left in the quarter.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire out with injury

Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire hurt his ankle on a play in the first quarter. The Chiefs said he would not return, leaving the team with Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon as the only tailbacks.

Chiefs are wearing all-white uniforms tonight

For the first time this season, the Chiefs will feature a one-color uniform combination in Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

This will be the 30th time the Chiefs have worn that uniform combination since 2000, according to the Gridiron Uniform Database. Here’s how they’ve done in the alternative uniforms.
