Royals’ Seth Lugo will miss start vs. the Cardinals with middle-finger injury
Kansas City Royals right-hander Seth Lugo will miss his upcoming start on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Kauffman Stadium.
Lugo is dealing with inflammation in his right middle finger. The injury occurred in his last start against the Boston Red Sox.
“We are in the very early stages of it and we are going to see how he responds,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.
This season, Lugo has a 3.02 ERA in nine starts. He allowed three earned runs in six innings against the Red Sox on May 11. The Royals will take a cautious approach and are expected to recall top prospect Noah Cameron for the spot start.
Cameron will make his second MLB start. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Tampa Bay Rays on April 30. This is the second time he will fill in for a Royals starter after stepping into the role for Cole Ragans.
The Royals host the Cardinals for three games this weekend. It’s a special occasion as the club honors the 1985 and 2015 World Series teams. Members of both squads will be in attendance for the festivities.
Cameron, who grew up in nearby St. Joseph, Missouri, gets a chance to pitch at home for the first time. The left-hander was drafted in the seventh round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Royals.
Quatraro hopes Lugo will miss just one start. Lugo is the latest Royals starter to deal with an injury this season. KC is also without Kyle Wright and Alec Marsh as both are sidelined with right shoulder injuries.
