Royals launch fan gear collection for women created with wives of players, coaches
The Kansas City Royals introduced a new line of team sports gear for women Friday, a fashion grand slam designed with input from their most loyal female fans — wives and partners of players and coaches.
The collection includes T-shirts and sweaters with bold graphics, a cozy denim baseball jacket and a powder-blue varsity-inspired cardigan that would make the cardi-craving fans of one particular sports fan envious. (Yes, we’re looking at you, Swifties.)
The Women of The K collection is a partnership with The Wild Collective, a woman-owned lifestyle brand in Las Vegas. Fashion entrepreneur Whitney Bansin founded the company 25 years ago to fill the void of stylish licensed sports apparel.
Working with MLB, the NFL, the NBA and other major leagues, Wild Collective has given swagger and trendy style to fan gear that, especially for female baseball fans, tends to be yawn-inducing.
The company did a similar collaboration with wives and female significant others in the Minnesota Twins organization a few seasons ago.
“They came to all the Royals wives and really wanted our input,” Kristina Bove, wife of assistant pitching coach Zach Bove, said in a behind-the-scenes video the Royals released with the collection.
“I just think they did such an amazing job making it very feminine and fun because I feel like that’s what’s lacked in a lot of Major League Baseball collections.”
Bove and other wives and significant others in the organization — including Maggie Witt, Sarah Wacha, Amanda Lugo, Priscilla Isbel and Emma Erceg — modeled the clothing.
Chris Quatraro, wife of Royals manager Matt Quatraro, is also featured in the campaign.
“My game-day look, obviously I want to represent, so my colors want to look like, hey, I’m here for the Royals,” said Quatraro.
“All of us are so different, so some girls threw in sparkly ideas, some girls threw in athletic ideas,” said Witt, who recently launched her own line of workout gear and celebrated by throwing out the first pitch Thursday.
The blue cardigan has the word “Royals” and a fountain on the back.
“Wild Collective just has a unique style and seeing what they can do with Kansas City with the blue, our fountains, it was just really cool,” said Wacha, wife of pitcher Michael Wacha.
Prices for the pieces range from $59.99 to $199.99 for the denim jacket, according to the Royals.
The Women of The K clothing is available exclusively at the Royals Team Store at Kauffman Stadium.
Merchandise can also be purchased by phone — 816-504-4045. Orders can be shipped via UPS or are available via curbside pickup.
In-season hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
On game days, the store opens at 10 a.m. and closes 30 minutes before the gates open. It reopens to ticketed fans once the stadium gates open.
