Kansas City Roos men’s basketball will have a new head coach in 2026-27

Four games into conference play of the 2025-26 college men’s basketball season, the KC Roos announced they will have a new head coach in 2026-27.

Head coach Marvin Menzies is in his fourth season at the helm of the program, which will be his last. The school has begun a national search for its next head coach.

The Roos are currently second-to-last in the Summit League with a 1-3 conference record. They are 4-14 overall.

Menzies took over for Billy Donlon in April 2022 after Donlon led the Roos to their most wins in program history since joining a conference. Donlon left the Roos to be an assistant at Clemson.

Menzies came in with much fanfare as the most decorated coach in program history with five NCAA Tournament appearances at New Mexico State from 2007-16. The high expectations fell short as the Roos have compiled a 44-71 record under the veteran head coach.

But Menzies’ Roos had their moments.

The program produced four All-Summit League performers and a second-place regular-season conference finish in 2023-24. The Roos also won their first conference tournament game since 2017 when they beat Oral Roberts last March.

“Coach Menzies has been a great ambassador of our men’s basketball program. Since arriving in Kansas City, Coach Menzies and his staff have been committed to the holistic development of our student-athletes and the advancement of the UMKC campus community at large,” vice chancellor and director of athletics Dr. Brandon Martin said.

“We wish Coach Menzies all the best in his professional and personal endeavors moving forward.”

The Roos have 12 more games this season, hosting six of them at Swinney Center, their unique home venue. KC will be back home on Jan. 24 to face Omaha.
