Mizzou hoops was set to go to Myrtle Beach. Tigers reportedly headed to Disney instead
Instead of going to the shores of Myrtle Beach, the Missouri Tigers are reportedly headed south to Disney World instead.
After the NBA’s bubble success in Orlando to finish its 2019-20 season, college basketball is following those footsteps for non-conference games, according to Jon Rothstein.
Major non-conference tournaments like the Champions Classic — which has kicked off college basketball in past seasons — will be moved from its original location to the friendly confines of Disney.
So too will the Myrtle Beach Invitational, featuring Mizzou in an eight-team field, which was originally scheduled Nov. 19-22 at the HTC Center on Coastal Carolina’s campus. The tourney field also includes Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Dayton, Penn, Utah State, Loyola-Chicago and Charlotte.
Other non-conference tournaments expected to be played in Orlando include the Jimmy V Classic, Preseason NIT, Orlando Invitational, Charleston Classic, Wooden Legacy and Diamond Head Classic.
How college basketball will look during the 2020-21 season is expected to be learned on Wednesday, when the NCAA Division I council meets. The sport’s start date, currently scheduled for Nov. 10, is expected to be pushed back.
The framework of the season, including the number of non-conference games teams will play and the minimum and maximum number of games a team must play in order to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, will also probably be altered.
Additional non-conference games could be added to the Orlando bubble for teams looking to fill their schedules, Rothstein reported.
The Tigers have a number of non-conference games that could be affected by the NCAA’s decision. Mizzou has two rivalry games, the Braggin’ Rights Game vs. Illinois and Border War against Kansas in Kansas City, slated for December. MU also has a road game scheduled against Wichita State.
