Bill Self comments on KU signing freshman forward — and makes a player comparison

Atticus Richmond, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound senior forward from The Newman School in Boston, has officially signed a financial aid agreement to play basketball at Kansas, coach Bill Self announced Tuesday.

Richmond, who revealed his commitment to KU on social media Saturday, averaged 9.0 points and 6.8 rebounds during the 2025-26 season at Newman School. He had previously attended Stevenson High School in his hometown of Lincolnshire Illinois and Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts.

“Atticus is a youngster that has great size,” KU coach Self said Tuesday. “He has some perimeter skills but mainly plays inside and will add depth to our big man positions. He’s been extremely well coached and well drilled. I look at him as a Mitch Lightfoot type when Mitch was coming to us out of high school.”

Richmond had initially committed to play at Columbia before switching to KU. He also had Lehigh on his list of schools.

He played AAU basketball for the Illinois Wolves on the Under Armour circuit.

Newman posted a 39-3 record and won the NEPSAC Class AAA championship, the national prep championship and the New England Basketball League title this past season.

KU currently has filled 13 of 15 scholarships for the 2026-27 season.

KU has a freshman class of Richmond, Tyran Stokes, Taylen Kinney, Davion Adkins, Luke Barnett, Trent Perry and Grant Mordini.

Kansas has also signed four transfers in Dennis Parker Jr. (Radford), Christian Reeves (College of Charleston), Keanu Dawes (Utah) and Leroy Blyden Jr. (Toledo). KU has returning players from the 2025-26 roster in Kohl Rosario and Paul Mbiya.
