Kansas Jayhawks defensive end, a former 4-star recruit, enters NCAA transfer portal
The future of Kansas football received a significant blow Thursday afternoon.
Freshman defensive end DJ Warner announced he will leave the Jayhawks and enter the NCAA transfer portal.
“First, I want to thank the whole Kansas staff, I am forever grateful for the time and effort put into this past season,” Warner wrote in a social media post. “I want to thank my teammates for the unforgettable relationships and memories that we have built over this year.
“I also want to thank the fans and everyone from Jayhawk nation for the constant support and love. With that being said with constant prayers and thought I’ve decided to enter my name in the transfer portal.”
Warner ended the season with just two tackles and five pressures over 202 defensive snaps. But his departure is a significant one for the Jayhawks.
The No. 148-ranked recruit nationally in the class of 2024, he was KU’s highest-rated signing since 2010. When they landed him, the Jayhawks beat out Ohio State, Michigan and others.
Warner’s departure means KU will likely turn to the transfer portal in search of help at defensive end.
The Jayhawks recently picked up commitments from high school defensive ends Adrian Holley and Garrett Martin. They are part of a 17-player recruiting class that Kansas signed on Wednesday.
