KU football workouts restart as AD announces latest COVID-19 testing results

The Kansas football team resumed voluntary workouts Wednesday after they had been shut down for nearly three weeks because of a coronavirus outbreak.

KU athletic director Jeff Long said in a statement that 90 football athletes, staff and coaches were tested Saturday for COVID-19. Among those, four tests were positive, with those individuals now following isolation protocols.

“Based upon the recommendation of our physicians at Kansas Team Health, we will resume voluntary football activities beginning today,” Long said.

Long originally announced July 3 that the team had suspended workouts with a two-week self-quarantine after 12 players tested positive for coronavirus. That was up from one positive test when KU’s football players initially arrived on campus in mid-June.

Kansas State also suspended its voluntary workouts on June 20 after it had 14 football players test positive for COVID-19. The Wildcats resumed voluntary workouts on July 13 after reporting they had two positives during their latest round of testing.
