Kansas State suspends all football workouts as more players test positive for COVID-19

Less than a week after Kansas State football players resumed voluntary workouts, the Wildcats have announced that they will suspend all organized team activities for at least the next two weeks as positive coronavirus tests continue to grow within the K-State athletic department.

As of Friday, 14 of the Wildcats’ student-athletes have tested positive for COVID-19. That number has grown steadily since K-State announced that it didn’t have any positive cases last week.

K-State has tested 130 of its student-athletes for the coronavirus.

“The health and well-being of our student-athletes will always be our top priority,” K-State athletic director Gene Taylor said. “Following the most recent test results, we felt like temporarily pausing all football workouts and access to our facilities was the best decision for everyone. We continue to take this situation very seriously and want to do everything we can to get back to workouts soon.”

All 14 of K-State’s positive cases are currently in self-isolation for 10 days, plus 72 hours without a fever.

Afterward, they should be allowed to join their teammates if voluntary summer workouts resume as scheduled on July 6.

Riley County has seen a spike in positive coronavirus cases in the past five days. When the week began there were 71 positive tests in the area. That number now sits at 103.

K-State athletics says it will continue to work closely and communicate with county and university health officials to evaluate the situation and continue best practices.
