KC has been snowless this February. Will weekend spoil attempt to tie record?

Get ready to pull the winter coats back out, Kansas City. The metro’s rare February warm spell ends Thursday, and colder air will rush in, bringing a small chance of light, non-sticking snow this weekend — just enough to threaten Kansas City’s bid for a rare snowless February.

But before the cold arrives, the metro will likely extend its two-week stretch of above-average temperatures, with afternoon temperatures climbing to around 66 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Typically, Kansas City’s high temperatures are around 45 degrees this time of year.

This February has been one of the warmest on record, with an average temperature of 44.8 degrees. Only 1954 was warmer, at an average of 45.6 degrees.

The warm, dry and breezy weather will again make it easy for grass and brush fires to start and spread quickly, prompting a red flag warning for parts of the region, according to the weather service.

Parts of east-central and southeast Kansas and central Missouri are under a red flag warning from noon to 8 p.m. Outdoor burning is highly discouraged.

A cold front is expected to arrive by Thursday evening, bringing cooler temperatures through the weekend. Temperatures are expected to drop back to near- or below-normal levels through the weekend and into the start of next week.

Temperatures are expected to reach about 44 degrees on Friday, 43 degrees on Saturday, 40 degrees on Sunday and 39 degrees on Monday.

There is a low chance, between 10% and 30%, for some light snow overnight Friday into early Saturday, the weather service said. Little to no accumulation is expected.

If no measurable snow falls, this will mark the second time since 1889 that Kansas City has had no new snow in February. The other time was in 1892, although several years had only a trace recorded.

Warmer air returns by Tuesday and Wednesday, sending temperatures back into the upper 50s and mid-60s in the metro.
