Heavy snow has moved out of Kansas City; roads remain slick and snow-packed
Heavy snow from a strong winter storm has moved out of the Kansas City metro, but road conditions remain slick and snow-covered.
“The good news is heavy snow has moved out of the area & totals have trended toward the lower end of the expected range,” the National Weather service said mid-morning Wednesday on Facebook. “The bad news is road conditions remain hazardous & periods of freezing drizzle and light snow continue through the afternoon.”
The weather service had updated its snowfall estimates overnight, saying that between 3 and 4 inches of snow was expected to accumulate across the Kansas City metro. Areas to the north were expected to see between 4 and 6 inches.
The weather service canceled the winter weather warning for much of the Kansas City region, switching to a winter weather advisory.
A wintry mix of precipitation is expected for the remainder of the storm. Kansas City and surrounding areas along Interstate 70 could see additional snow accumulations of up to 1 inch, along with a light glaze of ice, the weather service said.
“Roads around the metro area are covered,” the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Kansas City District said on X, formerly Twitter. “Please avoid travel if possible, but if you have to be out, use caution and plan ahead.”
