Blizzard-like conditions forced a wide swath of flight cancellations at Kansas City International Airport on Sunday.

The website FlightAware had recorded 263 cancellations as of 7:30 p.m., but a few flights were scheduled to resume late in the evening.

The National Weather Service reported heavy, blowing snow and breezy conditions, as well as visibility of a quarter-mile at the airport Sunday around 9 a.m. By 8 p.m., it had improved to visibility of a mile and a half, and the blowing snow was much lighter.

Justin Meyer, a spokesman for the airport, said crews have been working on keeping the airport’s runways and taxiways open for safe flight operations.

“Crews have not stopped their work on the airfield since yesterday morning,” he said Sunday morning. “Airlines have proactively canceled much of today’s scheduled flight activity.”

American and Southwest airlines said they were accommodating customers whose travel plans were changed by the weather.

American said it had issued a travel alert allowing customers to rebook without change fees. They can do so at aa.com or by calling 800-433-7300.

Southwest said customers who want to adjust their plans can rebook or travel standby within 14 days of their original travel date without incurring additional charges. Travelers can find more information at southwest.com/travel-advisory.
