How much rain has fallen in KC in 48 hours? For some, more than what’s normal for October
Rounds of showers and thunderstorms inundated the Kansas City area in the past 48 hours, turning streets and lawns soggy and exceeding what is typically seen in the entire month of October.
Lovely weather for ducks, as the saying goes.
About 2.28 inches of rain fell in the 48 hours ending at 6 a.m. Thursday at Kansas City International Airport (MCI), which is the official weather reporting station for Kansas City, according to data from the National Weather Service in Kansas City. Normally, Kansas City sees 3.25 inches of precipitation for the entire month.
But, depending on your location, you could have seen more or less rain.
About 4.9 inches of rain was reported the past two days at NewCentury Air Center in Olathe, which typically sees only 3.27 inches of rain in October. Johnson County Executive Airport in Olathe had 3.83 inches of rainfall, more than the 3.01 inches it normally sees for the month.
In Pleasant Hill, 4.21 inches of rain fell in that time period. Typically, it sees only 3.43 inches for the month.
Meanwhile, rain gauges across the Kansas City metro show even more rain fell in some areas during a 48-hour period ending at 9 a.m. Thursday, according to rainfall data from Stormwatch.com. The heaviest rain fell in the area of 119th Street and Ridgeview Road near Spring Hill where a gauge recorded 6.86 inches.
Other areas that saw excessive rainfall include the area near Lackman Road at Wolf Creek in southern Johnson County, which had 6.54 inches; West 67th Street and Caenen Street in Shawnee, which had 6.23 inches, and U.S. 69 and Blue River in southern Overland Park, which had 6.11 inches.

Rain is expected to taper off Thursday morning as storms move east out of the Kansas City area. There’s a 40 to 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms returning overnight with additional rains.
Conditions will dry out Friday afternoon and evening as a cold front moves through the area. The front will usher in colder air, bringing a hard freeze to the area by the end of the weekend.
Another round of storms is expected Saturday, bringing the chance for cold rain. The greatest chances of rain, 70 to 100%, will be Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to the weather service.
An additional .25 to .50 inches of rain is possible.
