An ice cream manufacturing company was evacuated after an ammonia leak Wednesday night in Kansas City.

Fire crews responded around 10:15 p.m. to Belfonte Ice Cream Company, 1511 Brooklyn Ave, where a valve on a 10,000 pound storage tank of ammonia was leaking and releasing large amounts of the gas, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins, a spokesman for the fire department.

Before crews arrived, around 10 employees and maintenance workers evacuated the building. Crews evaluated one person at the scene for exposure, and they were released.

Fire vehicles blocked the entrance to the contaminated area and made an isolation zone.

Hazmat officials shut down two valves and stopped the leak. The ventilation system in the building quickly dispersed the ammonia.

No injuries were reported at the scene, and there were no environmental hazards outside the structure. Hazmat crews were decontaminated using water.
