Freezing cold temperatures to move into Kansas City area. Could some areas see snowflakes?

Showers and thunderstorms continued to roll through the Kansas City area Thursday, but the chance of rain is expected to taper off as the day progresses, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

“Rain chances will be greatest through this morning for most,” the weather service said, pinning the possibility of rain at 60 to 70%.

By noon, rain chances are expected to fall to 20 to 30% in the Kansas City metro area. Conditions in the afternoon are expected to remain unseasonably warm with temperatures climbing into the mid-70s. Normal temperatures for this time of year in Kansas City are in the low 60s.

A strong cold front is expected to move through the region Thursday night and Friday morning, bringing the possibility of another round of storms. There is a 40 to 60% chance of rain for most in the Kansas City area through the morning and afternoon, the weather service said.

Conditions, however, will begin to dry out in the afternoon and an evening hours. Additional rainfall is expected to be a trace to .25 inches through Friday.

The front, however, will usher in much colder air. Temperatures on Friday are expected to reach the mid-50s with temps dropping into the 30s overnight.

Another round of storms is expected to push through the area Saturday, bringing the possibly of cold rain as temperatures will only climb into the 40s. The greatest chances of rain, 70 to 100%, will be Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to the weather service.

An additional .25 to .50 inches of rain is possible. Temperatures will tumble to around freezing overnight Saturday.

Because of the cold, there is a 40 to 50% chance of a rain and snow mix across northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas.

“Very minor accumulations may be possible although moisture is expected to be meager as temperatures drop,” the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

Cold conditions are expected to carry over into next week, with the coldest temperatures expected Sunday through Wednesday. A hard freeze is expected across the Kansas City, which will bring an end to the growing season.

Temperatures be in the mid-30s in Kansas City on Sunday and in the low to mid-40s Monday through Thursday.

For those celebrating Halloween outdoors, trick-or-treaters should plan on having warm costumes. Temperatures are expected to be a few degrees above freezing between 6 and 9 p.m. Tuesday.
