Multiple vehicle crashes shut down highways on both sides of the state line as winter weather rolled in during Thursday’s morning commute.

Southbound Interstate 635 is shut down across all lanes in Kansas past Interstate 70 because of a multi-vehicle crash that left a semi truck hanging off the overpass. According to KC Scout, the incident started at 6:25 a.m.

On the Missouri side, another portion of southbound I-635 at Horizons Parkway has been shut down across all lanes since 6 a.m. due to a multi-vehicle crash.

Officials warned drivers to be cautious because of slick roads caused by freezing rain and snowfall expected later in the day.

In the Kansas City area, the National Weather Service said roads are wet but drivers should watch out for ice especially on elevated surfaces. There will be freezing rain on and off throughout the morning, until snow rolls in around noon.

Most roads are wet and slick, the weather service said, but bridges will “almost certainly be a sheet of ice.”

The Missouri Department of Transportation said as of 5 a.m. that roads in northwest Missouri were covered by snow, and travelers in that area should allow extra time for their commutes. Drivers can check updating road conditions on traveler.modot.org.
