Update: In a message posted about 7:41 a.m., Kansas City International Airport said the airfield was open again.

Kansas City International Airport temporarily closed its Thursday morning because of ice on the runways.

In a message posted to Twitter about 7 a.m., the airport said crews had been trying all night to keep the airfield open but could not.

About 7:41 a.m., the airport posted another message saying the airfield was reopened and crews were continuing to treat it for ice.

According to the airport’s website, three flights were canceled and two were delayed Thursday morning.

A winter storm is ongoing and will continue Thursday throughout the Kansas City region, according to the National Weather Service.

In Kansas City, the morning commute is expected to be impacted by icy roads before snow begins about noon. The Kansas City area is expected to receive a light glaze of ice and less than an inch of snow.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. Thursday, the weather service said in a message posted to Twitter that most roads in the KC metro were wet and drivers should beware of ice on elevated surfaces.
