Light ice, slick roads predicted in Kansas City metro on Thursday morning: NWS

National Weather Service

As Kansas City prepared for a wintry mix of rain and snow expected to land late Wednesday, the National Weather Service was cautioning area residents about potentially slick and icy conditions in the metro on Thursday morning.

Rain, freezing rain, sleet and ice pellets were forms of precipitation expected to hit the metro area after nightfall on Wednesday following the downtown Kansas City parade celebrating the Chiefs Super Bowl victory. By Thursday morning, icy road conditions were expected to be possible as temperatures were to remain below freezing.

The National Weather Service was advising those driving on Thursday morning to take caution as light icing was expected along the Interstate 70 corridor. Safety tips include driving slowly, leaving a safe distance for other vehicles and leaving cruise control off.

Snowfall totals across Kansas City were expected to vary. Southern parts of the metro may see less than an inch, while others on the northern end may see between two and four inches.

Overnight temperatures were expected to fall to the low 20s and stay below freezing through Thursday. Strong wind gusts — ranging between 30 and 35 mph — were also expected to create low visibility for drivers areas with snowfall.
