Whoever wished for a white Christmas, we hope you’re happy.

Kansas City’s experiencing some extremely cold weather this weekend. It snowed, and the temperature dropped into the negatives for most of the day on Thursday, with wind chills pushing it colder.

The lowest temperature recorded this week was 4 degrees below zero, before windchill. Now, that’s cold.

While it seems like the freezing temperatures will stay until Christmas is over, this cold is not breaking any Kansas City records.

However, if you consider the windchill, it’s pretty close.

Kansas City’s coldest days on record

The coldest day in KC was 33 years ago to the date, according to the National Weather Service. Back in 1989, recorded temperatures in Kansas City reached a low of 23 degrees below zero on Dec. 23, before the windchill. It was also 23 degrees below zero on Dec. 22, 1989.

The next coldest date happened way back on Feb. 2, 1899, when it was 22 degrees below zero.

The coldest it’s been in recent years was 13 degrees below zero, recorded on Feb. 6, 2021.

And to compare the beginning of 2022 to the end, the temperature was recorded to be exactly 1 degree on Jan. 2, 2022.
